Public Access Workshop - Restaurants & Entertainment Venues

Learn the ins and ous of training your service dog to be well-manned in a wide variety of eating establishments and entertainment venues.

Description

This fun and informative workshop is designed to be repeated every four to six months as you and your dog progress in the level of public environment you are skilled enough to handle. 
 
Skills will be taught in a group setting and at stations set up throughout the Dog Alliance campus.  Students will be grouped by the age/skill level of their dog partners.  
 
This workshop will include many of the skills below:

  • Relaxing under tables
  • Tucking under chairs
  • Chairs with purses hanging low next to them
  • Tables with a variety of leg structures
  • Tables with table cloths
  • Tables with other people sitting near
  • Tables with food on top
  • Working under a table when food is dropped
  • Working with the high table and chairs
  • Chairs in rows like a movie theatre.  Simulate a theatre with movie and lights low
  • Outdoor cafe simulations
  • Going through a buffet line - by themselves and with others
  • Going up to a counter to get a tray of food
  • Back up into a corner
  • Staying under the table when waitstaff approaches
  • People greetings and how to handle declining greetings
  • Restrooms - use the tot restroom in building A to practice with stalls
  • Counters - approaching, staying while paying
  • Check out lines - How to behave in close proximity to others in a line
  • Variety of noises
  • Benches - How to slide in, work with the dog when your motion is sideways

 In addition to many training tips and practice environments, this course will also review fundamental skills for successful outings.  These include:  

  • Body language review
  • Knowing when to call it quits
  • When/how to use food treats
  • Laws and etiquette when working with training dogs in public places

Assistance Dogs International Disclaimer

Successfully attending and completing this course or the entire series of service dog courses does not qualify you as a service/assistance dog trainer qualified to train dogs for others.  The purpose of our program is to guide you as you train your own dog to be your service dog.  The Dog Alliance is a fully accredited member of Assistance Dogs International.   

Prerequisites

Age of Dog: 6 months and older or instructor approval

Prerequisite:  Prior attendance at the Service Dog Program Introduction Seminar.

This course is for Train Your Own Service Dog program members with an approved application on file.  The fee will be discounted during checkout when you input your membership number.  Potential members may enroll in one course while their application is in process.  Your fee can be applied to the program deposit when your application is approved.
