Are me and my dog ready for therapy dog evaluation?

Learn more about volunteering with your dog and run through all the exercises of the Bow Wow Therapy Dog evaluation to determine if your dog is ready for the therapy dog evaluation.

Description

In this workshop, you will learn about the joys of volunteering with your dog.  You will learn how the program is funded, where we visit, and our code of ethics.  You and your dog as a team will run through all the Bow Wow Therapy Dog evaluation exercises to determine if your dog is ready.  Your instructor will suggest alternatives for teams who need a little extra practice.

This workshop contains working segments with your dog and segments where your dog is expected to lie quiet at your feet while you listen and learn from the instructor.  Please bring a dog toy and mat if that will help our dog settle when needed.

Instructors: This course is taught by senior-level trainers who are also therapy dog team evaluators and have extensive personal experience volunteering with their own therapy dogs.

Prerequisites

Prior Training Required:  To enroll in this workshop, your dog must be able to complete the following skills reliably in new environments:

  • sit
  • down
  • recall
  • loose leash walking with a flat collar
  • leave it

Additionally, dogs must be able to greet strangers without jumping up.  Dogs must be able to work calmly when another dog is also working nearby.  The ideal dog is comfortable in new situations and loves to be pet by everyone: young, old, all races, all sizes, wearing any type of garment.

Age of dog:  12 months minimum.  Please note that dogs closer to 18 months and older tend to do better at the course.
