Public Access Workshop - Stores

Practice skills needed when visiting a variety of public stores.

Description

Learn:
  • How to read your dog's body language 
  • When to call it quits on a public outing and why this is so important 
  • When and how to use food treats.  Learn how to fade treats.
  • About laws and etiquette when working with service dogs in training in public places
Practice:
  • Loose leash walking with grocery carts
  • Loose leash walking with a purse or shopping bag or items in your arms
  • Approaching and standing next to counters
  • Appropriate behavior while paying for items at a counter
  • Walking in isles when others are near - simulated with barriers in the classroom
  • Leaving food or toys that are on shelves at nose height
  • Leave it exercises with piles of stuffed toys
  • Leave it exercises with bags of compost
  • Leave it exercises with fresh meat or dog bones at nose height
  • Loose leash walking when the handler is pulling one of the gorilla carts
  • People greetings and how to handle declining greetings
  • Encountering people who are carrying odd-shaped items like a ladder or bodyboard

Students will be grouped according to skill level.  Groups will travel between practice locations in both buildings and outside.  There will be a 15 minutes socialization period in the middle of the class to ask questions and take a break.  Each location will have an experienced instructor there to guide and teach.  

We encourage you to take this course many times throughout your dog's training journey.

Successfully attending and completing a course or the entire series of service dogs courses does not qualify you as a service/assistance dog trainer that is qualified to train dogs for others.  The purpose of our program is to guide you as you train your own dog to be your service dog.  The Dog Alliance is a fully accredited member of Assistance Dogs International

Prerequisites

Age of Dog: 6 months and older

Prerequisite:  Prior attendance at the Service Dog Program Introduction Seminar.

This course is for Train Your Own Service Dog program members with an approved application on file.  The fee will be discounted during checkout when you input your membership number.  Potential members may enroll in one course while their application is in process.  Your fee can be applied to the program deposit when your application is approved.
