Puppy Kindergarten - Ages 8 to 16 weeks

The first 16 weeks of a puppy's life are the most important weeks in their entire life. We can help you set the stage for a happy and confident adult dog.

Description

There is nothing better in this world than welcoming a new puppy to your home. 

Join us to learn more about socializing and training very young puppies.  These are the most critical weeks of your puppy's life.  

The course will cover:

  • Puppy stages of development
  • Socialization – how to socialize your young puppy so you will have a calm and confident adult dog
  • How to teach your dog to sit for attention instead of jumping
  • How to handle puppy teething, mouthing, and chewing
  • Crating and potty training
  • Teaching self-control – when putting on a collar and during feeding time
  • Basic cues including sit, name recognition, down and recall
  • Early leash walking skills based on your dog’s desire to be near you
  • Handling and grooming
  • How to teach your puppy to chew their toys and not your arms, kids, or shoes
  • How to work with a shy puppy or one that has been frightened
  • Healthy ways to play with your adorable puppy

Topics will be introduced and then practiced with games and props.  

Prerequisites

Age of Puppy:  8 weeks to 16 weeks

Students with large breed dogs that are over 14 weeks can also take the puppy manners course.  

Puppies must have had at least one round of shots 7 days before class.  Shelter puppies must have been in your home for 14 days before attending class.  Please do not bring your puppy if there are any signs of illness, including skin or ear issues.  Credits will be provided for puppies that miss class due to illness.  Directions for submitting veterinarian records will be provided with your course confirmation email.  

What to bring

  • At least 100 small, high value treats
  • A quiet chew toy
  • A small resting mat or towel
